Back from a week-long polar expedition in the Arctic, training for our Polar Dogs Antarctica Expedition 🇦🇶. My first time sleeping and cooking in a tent in a polar environment. It was beautiful. And hard. I’ve slept well since I’ve been back!
The hardest parts
The hardest parts were breaking trail through thick fresh snow. In the worst sections, even on skis we’d sink down to our knees with every step. And dragging a 37kg sled up the steep bits. Some bits I couldn’t get up, so had to learn some sidestepping techniques. In Antarctica, our sleds will be around 80kg…
But, I did it! Now feel so much more confident and prepared and excited for going out solo (with Ben Weber) on our required polar training trips and for our Antarctica crossing next year.
And I learnt how to navigate in a whiteout (more practice needed!)
What I’m taking home
I also got a very clear picture of how much stronger I still need to get, and that I need to start learning how to fix things that break in freezing conditions. And I came back with an eye infection. Lesson to pack ALL the meds.
Next month I’m back to Norway for our own 8-day expedition with Ben, plus cross-country ski training.
We’re looking for sponsors and partners who want to be part of this journey. It’s going to be wild. Please get in touch 🙂
