72 Holes South
Erica Stanford and Ben Weber · Antarctica, November 2027 – February 2028
Ben Weber loves golf. He plays as often as he can, and he has been doing his PhD at St Andrews. Conveniently.
72 golf holes across Antarctica, from the North coast, via the South Pole, to where land meets ice on the other side.
The course
What it is
Exploration has always been about pushing beyond what seems possible. Antarctica remains one of the last great frontiers on Earth: vast, remote, and largely untouched. A crossing of the continent is a demanding journey, requiring endurance, resilience, and months of self-sufficiency.
By combining this expedition with 72 Holes South, the project connects the spirit of exploration with one of the world’s most widely played sports. Each hole will be played in one of the most extreme environments on Earth, turning every shot into part of a journey across the ice.
How we will actually play it
As we ski our 2,000 km route across Antarctica, we will create a temporary hole in the snow and play. There will be no permanent course, no prepared fairways and, naturally, no greens — on snow, they are called whites.
The golf will also have to fit Antarctica, rather than the other way around. We will play only where the terrain, visibility and weather make it safe and practical to do so. Some days that might allow us to hit proper golf shots across the snow. However, in poor visibility, strong winds or unsuitable terrain, the clubs will stay in the sledge.
Nothing will get left behind. Any golf balls and equipment we take onto the ice will come back out with us, and every ball played will need to be recovered.
We’ll be working through the logistics with Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions (ALE), alongside the wider environmental and permitting requirements for the expedition. That includes the type and colour of ball we use, the distances and shots we play, and the safeguards we put in place to make sure every ball can be found and recovered.
The aim is not to build a golf course in Antarctica but rather to play Golf all the way across Antarctica over 72 holes.
What a partner could do with it
- Naming rights. 72 Holes South, presented by [Your Brand]. On the flag, in every piece of film, and in every mention of it.
- Clubs, balls and bag. Your equipment, and only your equipment, used and filmed in conditions no golf kit was designed for. You get the same field test report the rest of our kit partners get.
- The nineteenth hole. A drink poured at the South Pole, on camera, at −50°C.
- Film and photography. We carry Starlink, a drone and cameras. Stills and video from the holes we play, licensed for your own channels.
- A round your customers can play along with. A parallel competition, a charity round, a leaderboard your members or your staff follow while we are out on the ice.
- The trophy. This definitely needs a trophy. We’ll have one made, with your name on it.
72 Holes South sits inside the wider expedition, so it can be part of a sponsorship or a product partnership, or it can stand on its own.
